African Penguin

Images taken at Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town, Cape Town, South Africa

The African Penguin settled at Boulders Beach in 1982 on the soft white sand and granite boulders that afford protection from the wind and stormy seas. The population is now thought to be 2-3,000 penguins and are classified as an endangered species. Habitat loss, pollution, over-fishing and irresponsible human behaviours (consuming the eggs) have been the main cause of the population decline. Boulders and surrounding beaches are now part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area, allowing the species to grow in a safe and controlled manner. A purpose built boardwork allows visitors to view them on the beach and nest areas.
