Flabellina poenicia is a small elongate aeolid that has a transparent clear body with hues of pink. The head has two purple spots on each side of the head in front of the rhinophore base. The cerata are scattered, cylindrical and translucent showing the orange or yellow digestive glands. There is a deep orange-red subapical band on the cerata near the tip. The cnidosac is opaque white. The upper half of the rhinophores have papillae on the posterior side, though these can be absent in juveniles. The oral tentacles are long and conical and translucent like the body and rhinophores.

They feed on hydroids.
